storm surge

The term 'storm surge' as it applies to the area of the weather can be defined as ' An abnormal rise in sea level accompanying a hurricane or other intense storm, whose height is the difference between the observed level of the sea surface and the level that would have occurred in the absence of the cyclone. Storm surge is usually estimated by subtracting the normal or astronomic tide from the observed storm tide'.

The term 'storm surge' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' a rise or piling-up of water against shore, produced by strong winds blowing onshore. a storm surge is most severe when it occurs in conjunction with a high tide. '.
