The term 'sounding' as it applies to the area of the weather can be defined as ' A set of data measuring the vertical structure of an atmospheric parameter (temperature, humidity, pressure, winds, etc.) at a given time'.

The term 'sounding' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' a measured depth of water. on hydrographic charts the soundings are adjusted to a specific plane of reference (sounding datum)'.
