The term 'respiration' as it applies to the area of carbon dioxide can be defined as ' A biochemical process by which living organisms take up oxygen from the environment and consume organic matter, releasing both carbon dioxide and heat. In plants, the organic matter in photosynthate produced during daylight hours'.

The term 'respiration' as it applies to the area of the environment can be defined as 'The process whereby living organisms convert organic matter to CO2, releasing energy and consuming O2.3'.

The term 'respiration' as it applies to the area of Earth observation can be defined as ' The process by which animals use up stored foods (by combustion with oxygen) to produce energy'.
