The term 'reach' as it applies to the area of the weather can be defined as ' In hydrologic terms, the distance between two specific points outlining that portion of the stream, or river for which the forecast applies. This generally applies to the distance above and below the forecast point for which the forecast is valid. '.

The term 'reach' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' (1) an arm of the ocean extending into the land. (2) a straight section of restricted waterway of considerable extent; may be similar to a narrows, except much longer in extent'.
