proctosigmoidoscopy -- (PRAHK-toh-sig-moy-DAHS-kuh-pee) An examination of the lower colon using a thin, lighted tube, called a sigmoidoscope, inserted into the rectum. Samples of tissues may be collected for examination under a microscope. Also called sigmoidoscopy.
