The term 'pixel' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' an element of surface resulting from subdividing an image into the smallest identically shaped figures that give information about the location, intensity and perhaps color of the source, but such that no smaller subdivision will provide more information'.

The term 'pixel' as it applies to the area of Earth observation can be defined as ' Pixel, short for picture element, is the ground area corresponding to a single element of a digital image data set'.
