The term 'percolation' as it applies to the area of water can be defined as '(1) The movement of water through the openings in rock or soil. (2) the entrance of a portion of the streamflow into the channel materials to contribute to ground water replenishment'.

The term 'percolation' as it applies to the area of the weather can be defined as ' In hydrologic terms, the movement of water, under hydrostatic pressure, through the interstices of a rock or soil, except the movement through large openings such as caves'.

The term 'percolation' as it applies to the area of carbon dioxide can be defined as ' The movement of water downward and radially through the subsurface soil layers, usually continuing downward to the groundwater'.
