The term 'oceanography' as it applies to the area of the weather can be defined as ' The study of the ocean, embracing and integrating all knowledge pertaining to the ocean's physical boundaries, the chemistry and physics of sea water, and marine biology'.

The term 'oceanography' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' that science treating of the oceans, their forms, physical features and phenomena'.
