The term 'ocean' as it applies to the area of Earth observation can be defined as ' The salt water surrounding the great land masses. The land masses divide the ocean into several distinct portions, each of which also is called an ocean. The oceans include the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean'.

The term 'ocean' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' the great body of salt water which occupies two-thirds of the surface of the earth, or one of its major subdivisions'.
