The term 'mineral' as it applies to the area of energy can be defined as ' Any of the various naturally occurring in organic substances, such as metals, salt, sand, stone, sulfur, and water, usually obtained from the earth. Note For reporting on the Financial Reporting System the term also includes organic non-renewable substances that are extracted from the earth such as coal, crude oil, and natural gas'.

The term 'mineral' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' a naturally occurring, inorganic, crystalline solid that has a definite chemical composition and possesses characteristic physical properties'.
