The term 'hydrosphere' as it applies to the area of carbon dioxide can be defined as ' The aqueous envelope of the Earth, including the oceans, freshwater lakes, rivers, saline lakes and inland seas, soil moisture and vadose water, groundwater, and atmospheric vapor'.

The term 'hydrosphere' as it applies to the area of the environment can be defined as 'The component of the climate system comprising liquid surface and subterranean water, such as: oceans, seas, rivers, fresh water lakes, underground water etc.3'.

The term 'hydrosphere' as it applies to the area of Earth observation can be defined as ' The totality of water encompassing the Earth, comprising all the bodies of water, ice, and water vapor in the atmosphere'.
