The term 'geology' as it applies to the area of reclamation can be defined as ' The science that deals with the physical history of the earth, the rocks of which it is comprised, and the physical changes which the earth has undergone or is undergoing'.

The term 'geology' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' the science which treats of the origin, history and structure of the earth, as recorded in rocks; together with the forces and processes now operating to modify rocks'.
