The term 'geoid' as it applies to the area of Earth observation can be defined as ' A surface of constant gravitational potential around the Earth--an averaged surface perpendicular to the force of gravity'.

The term 'geoid' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' the equipotential surface of the earth's gravity field which best fits, in the least squares sense, mean sea level'.
