The term 'elevation' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' the distance of a point above a specified surface of constant potential; the distance is measured along the direction of gravity between the point and the surface'.

The term 'elevation' as it applies to the area of reclamation can be defined as ' The height of a point above a plane of reference. Generally refers to the height above sea level. See datum'.

The term 'elevation' as it applies to the area of Earth observation can be defined as ' The angle at which an antenna must be pointed above the horizon for optimal reception from a spacecraft'.
