The term 'bioassay' as it applies to the area of nuclear science can be defined as ' The determination of kinds, quantities, or concentrations and, in some cases, locations of radioactive material in the human body, whether by direct measurement (in vivo counting) or by analysis and evaluation of materials excreted or removed (in vitro) from the human body. '.

The term 'bioassay' as it applies to the area of Earth observation can be defined as ' A measurement of the effects of a substance on living organisms'.
