The term 'benchmark' as it applies to the area of the weather can be defined as ' (Abbrev. BM) - In hydrologic terms, a permanent point whose known elevation is tied to a national network. These points are created to serve as a point of reference. Benchmarks have generally been established by the USGS, but may have been established by other Federal or local agencies. Benchmarks can be found on USGS maps'.

The term 'benchmark' as it applies to the area of basic math can be defined as 'a commonly known point of reference from which measurements may be made (e.g., four quarters make a whole)'.
