The term 'beaufort scale' as it applies to the area of the weather can be defined as ' The Beaufort wind scale is a system used to estimate and report wind speeds when no measuring apparatus is available. It was invented in the early 19th Century by Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort of the British Navy as a way to interpret winds from conditions at sea. Since that time, the scale has been modernized for effects on land'.

The term 'beaufort scale' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' the relationship between sea state and wind speed. the beaufort scale can be used to estimate wind speed at sea, but is valid only for waves generated within the local weather system, and assumes that there has been sufficient time for a fully developed sea to have become established'.
