International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP)

The term 'International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP)' as it applies to the area of Earth observation can be defined as ' The International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) is an interdisciplinary scientific activity established and sponsored by the International Council for Science (ICSU). The program was instituted by ICSU in 1986, and the IGBP Secretariat was established at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1987 and is focused on acquiring basic scientific knowledge about the interactive processes of biology and chemistry of the earth as they relate to Global Change.
