Check dam

The term 'Check dam' as it applies to the area of reclamation can be defined as ' A small dam designed to retard the flow of water and sediment in a channel, used especially to control soil erosion. Small barrier constructed in a gully or other small watercourse to decrease flow velocity, minimize channel scour, and promote deposition of sediment'.
