The term 'Anaerobic' as it applies to the area of reclamation can be defined as ' A condition in which free (atmospheric) or dissolved oxygen is not present in water. The opposite of aerobic'.

The term 'Anaerobic' as it applies to the area of hazardous materials can be defined as 'Requiring the absence of oxygen [compare with aerobic]'.
