Air Mass

The term 'Air Mass' as it applies to the area of photovoltaics can be defined as 'Approximately equal to the secant of the zenith angle--that angle from directly overhead to a line intersecting the sun. The air mass is an indication of the length of the path solar radiation travels through the atmosphere. An air mass of 1.0 means the sun is directly overhead and the radiation travels through one atmosphere (thickness)'.

The term 'Air Mass' as it applies to the area of Earth observation can be defined as ' Large body of air, often hundreds or thousands of miles across, containing air of a similar temperature and humidity. Sometimes the differences between air masses are hardly noticeable, but if colliding air masses have very different temperatures and humidity values, storms can erupt. See front'.

The term 'Air Mass' as it applies to the area of the weather can be defined as ' A body of air covering a relatively wide area and exhibiting horizontally uniform properties'.
