The term 'Acute exposure' as it applies to the area of reclamation can be defined as ' A single exposure to a toxic substance which results in severe biological harm or death. Acute exposures are usually characterized as lasting no longer than a day'.

The term 'Acute exposure' as it applies to the area of hazardous materials can be defined as 'Contact with a substance that occurs once or for only a short time (up to 14 days) [compare with intermediate duration exposure and chronic exposure]'.
