'preliminary communications search' is an military term. It means '(DOD) In search and rescue operations, consists of contacting and checking major facilities within the areas where the craft might be or might have been seen. A preliminary communications search is normally conducted during the uncertainty phase. Also called PRECOM. See also search and rescue incident classification, Subpart a'.
