personnel security investigation

'personnel security investigation' is an military term. It means '(DOD) Any investigation required for the purpose of determining the eligibility of DOD military and civilian personnel, contractor employees, consultants, and other persons affiliated with the Department of Defense, for access to classified information, acceptance or retention in the Armed Forces, assignment or retention in sensitive duties, or other designated duties requiring such investigation. Also called PSI'.
